Our Stuff

Our Tanzanian founder, Vincent, started off as a porter, trying to pay his school fees, slowly working his way up into the head guide position. After many years in the industry, it became clear that the porters and guides in most companies are treated and paid unfairly for their work. Because tourism in Tanzania is a tip-based business, much like restaurants in the United States, porters and guides earn a very low daily rate. This would be an acceptable system if the distribution of tips was appropriately handled. However, these tips are often pocketed by guides or even company owners. So, what makes us different? Regardless of tips, we have committed to paying a daily rate to our porters and guides that far exceed the minimum required rates, and ensure that they are well-fed, supplied, and trained. You’ll see that our staff is the happiest on the mountain, and that attitude makes the difference between an energetic hike of a lifetime and a defeated journey back to base after an unsuccessful climb. Our porters and guides are like family, and it’s our commitment to treat them accordingly.

Giving Back to the Community

Our founder, having grown up in Arusha, has made sure that we are heavily invested in the Tanzanian people. Not only does that include our family of porters and guides, but also the many orphaned children who need support and a stable environment to receive an education and grow into community changers.  Joy Africa Safari launched the Arusha Children’s Home also register in the USA as Choose Love Inc, several years ago to do just that.  We have committed to donating at least 10% of all annual profits directly into ACH through Choose Love Inc  So be confident that when you travel and climb with Joy Africa Safari, you are changing lives for the better.  Check out the Arusha Children’s Home page to learn more and meet some of the children.
